S-STEM Scholars Program

The goal of the Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) program is to improve the success of college students who have excelled academically in high school but are challenged economically and are intending to major in one of the STEM fields below. To achieve this goal, through a grant from the National Science Foundation, Wisconsin Lutheran College will provide $6,000 or $10,000 scholarships to students each year for four years and guide them through a curriculum that involves STEM research along with peer and faculty mentoring. 

  • Amount of Scholarship

    There are seven scholarships available for the 2019-2020 academic year and seven for the 2020-2021 academic year. Four scholarships will provide $6,000 per year for four years and three scholarships will provide $10,000 per year for four years

    Conditions of Eligibility

    The applicant must: 

    1. Be enrolled full-time in a Wisconsin Lutheran College major leading to a bachelor’s degree in one of the following programs: biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or marine biology.

    2. Make adequate academic progress by maintaining an overall GPA greater than 3.0 and staying on track to graduate in four years.

    3. Be a citizen of the United States.

    4. Demonstrate financial need as determined by calculating Cost of Attendance minus Estimated Family Contribution for the student as determined in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be classified as Pell Grant eligible.

    5. Be willing to participate in the required activities of the WLC S-STEM Scholars Program.

    Award Conditions

    All participants in the WLC S-STEM Scholars Program will be required to do the following:

    1. Attend a week-long STEM orientation day camp in mid-August that will introduce incoming first-year students to WLC and the STEM majors and courses.

    2. Enroll in the one-credit BIO 191-Introduction to STEM Research course during their first semester at WLC.

    3. Participate in regular mentor meetings with student and faculty.

    4. Enroll in independent research with faculty during their sophomore and junior years, followed by enrollment in the capstone research course (or equivalent) during their senior year.

    5. Participate in assessment activities to determine the success of the WLC S-STEM Scholars Program.

    Conditions of Competition

    Students must:

    1. Complete an application for undergraduate enrollment at WLC.

    2. Complete the application for financial aid at WLC.

    3. Complete the WLC S-STEM Scholars application form, including the one-page essay and reference letter from a high school STEM teacher or mentor.

    4. Applications for Fall 2020 are currently being accepted.
